Greenland ice sheet mass balance: distribution of increased

Mass changes in the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) are of considerable interest because of their sensitivity to climate change, the mass-loss contribution to sea-level rise, and the likelihood of an increasing rate of mass loss with climate warming. In recent years, the GIS has experienced increased surface melting from increasing temperatures (Hall andGet price

Assessing the Current Evolution of the Greenland Ice Sheet by

The present study utilises different satellite and ground-based geodetic observations in order to assess the current evolution of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS). The inferred time series are investigated regarding long-term, seasonal andGet price

Evaluating Surface Mass Balance spatiotemporal variability in

The Surface Mass Balance (SMB) of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) is an important contributor to changes in sea level, now, and in the future. Both modeling and observational studies have revealed accelerating loss of mass over Greenland, of which approximately 50% has been attributed to changes in SMB, with the other 50% coming from increases in glacial discharge.Get price

Greenland Ice Sheet Today | Surface Melt Data presented by NSIDC

Overview of ConditionsConditions in ContextAcknowledgementsSurface melting on the Greenland ice sheet ramped down at a near-normal pace in the weeks following the major melt event of early August (Figure 1). Only a few minor late-season melt events occurred in September and October. Overall, melting on the Greenland ice sheet for 2019 was the seventh-highest since 1978, behind 2012, 2010, 2016, 2002, 2007, and 2011 (Figure 2). Since 2000, the ice sheet has experienced a general increase in melting, with melt-day area for 2019 totaling 28.3 million square kilometers (10.9 million square miles) for the season. Melting was observed over nearly 90 percent of the island on at least one day, reaching the Summit Station and much of the high-altitude areas. It was particularly intense along the northern edge of the ice sheet, where compared to the 1981 to 2010 average, melting occurred for an additional 35 days. The number of days with melting was slightly above average along the western flank of the ice sheet as well, with about 15 to 20 more days...Get price

Greenland’s Rapid Melting Is a Hugely Underplayed Story

Aug 11, 2019 · After all, the GIS has been melting for decades. The tough part is getting people to pay attention. In northeast Greenland the sheet is vanishing even faster than climate models predict. Recent research has shown that the most rapid melt is in southwest Greenland, where the glaciers by and large don’t terminate in the sea.Get price
